In 2004 125 Market Drayton 10k was run for the very first time by 125 runners. The race was initially sponsored by our very own local producer of quality dairy products hence it being known as ‘Muller 10k’ and the route passing through their factory premises. The route was later changed for safety reasons and to prevent traffic congestion. Dave Mansbridge of Wrekin Road Runners and Ros Barker of Stone Master Marathoners set the initial course records at 33:04 and 41:15 respectively.

In 2009 the event was hosted at Grove School for the first time and we continue to start and finish on the sports field there making use of the great facilities available.

In 2011, due to other business commitments, Muller were unable to continue such an intensive level of involvement in the race and just a few weeks from race day, with 1,000 runners already entered they offered to hand it over to the local running club who were unable to take on the responsibility of managing the 10k. In the absence of an established committee; with no available funding but determined not to let the race be abandoned Tim Beckett and Jane Morris rose to the challenge; John Rayson was appointed Chairman and supported by Andy Brown, Steve Oliver, Geoff Russell, John Gough and a few other local stalwarts they ensured the race went ahead and all finishers received their Muller T-shirt & yogurts. The route then was almost the reverse of the current one.

In 2012 Geoff Chevins joined the existing team and the momentum continued for that race with an increased number of runners. Fix Auto came on board, became the events premier sponsor in 2013 and have remained so through to the present day. That same year the current route was set which is particularly suited to the local community who come out in their hundreds to add their support, and it allows road closures to be lifted swiftly from the busier roads. Chris Davies of Telford AC set a new course record of 30:39. In 2014 the role of Chairman was passed to Geoff Chevins.

In 2015 Kim Fawke of Lawley RC set a new course record for the ladies at 34:56.

2016 was the 5th year anniversary since the race was taken over by a team of volunteers; Tim remained Race Director and together with the Event Management Team ensured Market Draytons 10k continued to go from strength to strength. For the first time numbers were raised to 2,500 runners. In addition, 300 children joined in the Fun Runs and spectators and supporters doubled visitor numbers to our town.

MD10k 2017 was the best ever; we sold out in less than 24hrs! Tim Beckett continued as Race Director and Debbie Scotcher took over  the role of Chair  – both supported by an extremely small team of volunteers who worked tirelessly throughout the year to put Market Draytons largest one day event on the road. Bespoke T-shirts and medals were once again designed for all runners. Fix Auto remained the events premier sponsor for the 6th consecutive year and local businesses including Muller, Palethorpes, The Little Treats Company & Joules continued to provide our runners with products to take home in their goody bags (which were second to none) and further complimented by products from other generous companies as well as mementoes and surprises generated by the team. For the first time our childrens MD10k Fun Run was exclusively sponsored by Oruna; every child went home with a medal, great memories and handfuls of treats of their own. Barbers Auctions LLP kindly loaned us their premises for our park and ride, and all donations made there are being donated to Midlands Air Ambulance.

MD10k has been recognised many times as the best UK 10k and we’re extremely proud to have achieved the support of runners who have voted for us against very strong competition in various running awards. For the first time ever we entered ourselves into the UK Running Awards… and received BRONZE! From thousands of UK races, with tens of thousands of runners we came in the top 3… absolutely amazing result.

We strive to look after our runners, their families, and our supporters from near and far hence the entertainment provided on the school field which is shared by stalls many of whom are fundraising. Profit made at the event is to be shared with those who need our help in the community and we will continue to donate to many local good causes and charities. We hope you will continue to support Market Drayton 10k as it progresses into the future.

MD10k 2018 finds Tim Beckett leading from the front as he continues in the role of Race Director with a fresh team of volunteers. Much of the event was organised almost before 2017 was packed away, and it’s already shaping up to be an amazing day. Sunday 13th May 2018 is race day, onine entries open July 1st at 6pm…. see the MARKET DRAYTON 10k Facebook page for details.
